Will Dental Veneers Stop You From Getting Braces?

Dentist Blog

Your dental veneers undoubtedly improved the appearance of your teeth, and in doing so, they gave the impression that they had changed the configuration of your teeth. This is why veneers are a valid choice to correct mildly crooked teeth. However, the ultimate result might still have been lacking, and so you've decided that comprehensive orthodontic treatment is needed. But will the fact that you have dental veneers attached to your teeth complicate your efforts?

Standard Braces

Traditional metal braces in a patient's mouth are generally affixed to the outward-facing surfaces of the teeth. These brackets apply gentle pressure to promote bone remodelling, leading to the gradual reconfiguration of your teeth. Dental veneers won't prevent this from happening, and provided your restorations are secure, traditional braces can still be applied. However, while your veneers will still permit the necessary movement of the teeth they're attached to, they might be compromised by the process. The brackets of these braces have the potential to scratch or scuff the porcelain surface of the veneers. This means that your veneers might need to be replaced when your treatment has concluded. They may still be intact, however, their aesthetics will have been affected.

Lingual Braces

It's not as though traditional braces are the only form of orthodontic treatment to straighten teeth. In fact, traditional braces might not even be recommended for some patients. You might benefit from lingual braces, which have the same basic arrangement as traditional braces but are attached to the backs of your teeth. This means that your braces are essentially invisible, while not coming into contact with your veneers. The positioning of these braces can result in some discomfort (which will dissipate as you grow accustomed to the lingual braces), and you might develop a minor lisp. This is because the braces have created a physical obstacle that impedes the tip of your tongue when pronouncing the "s" sound. You will have to make some extra effort to enunciate these sounds.

Transparent Aligners

When the desired repositioning of your teeth doesn't warrant metal braces, your orthodontist might recommend Invisalign or another transparent aligner system. This is a way to ensure that your dental veneers will not be affected by your orthodontic treatment. This is because the aligners are detachable, and so will not be bonded to your teeth. It means your veneers will not be displaced by the treatment.

Dental veneers can pose a small challenge when you need orthodontic treatment, but this challenge can be overcome, often without affecting your veneers at all.
