Smart Dental Tips for University Students

As a university student, you probably know how random your schedule can be. You may have morning classes one day and late classes the next. As a result, keeping up with your dental hygiene can be challenging. It's not uncommon to wake up late and forget to brush your teeth or sleep at odd hours such that you forget to brush and floss.

This is why paying attention to your dental hygiene as a university student is critical. You wouldn't want to end up with stained teeth, smelly breath or gum infections while going to class. Here are some tips that will help you keep your dental hygiene in check.

Brush your teeth every morning and evening

Regardless of your schedule, brushing your teeth at least twice a day is one of the most important things you can do in terms of oral health. This is because regular brushing will remove food particles that may end up forming plaque. Plaque not only stains your teeth, but it can also cause gum infections, cavities and tooth loss.

The best way of keeping up with regular brushing is by having specific waking up/sleeping times. Set these times in accordance with your schedule and make sure you brush your teeth as soon as you get out of bed.

Buy a pack of toothbrushes at the beginning of every term

University students also tend to hold on to the same toothbrush for too long. Dentists recommend that you should replace your toothbrush at least once every 3 months. Furthermore, don't store your toothbrush in a moist place. Keep it in a cool, dry area where the bristles will receive enough airflow. Moisture can turn into a breeding ground for bacteria, mould and other harmful items.

Watch what you eat

Being away from home often causes university kids to eat unhealthy foods on several occasions. While you don't have to go on a diet to have healthy teeth, avoid over-indulging in highly sugary foods. You should particularly avoid eating sugary foods right before you go to sleep, as these can accelerate tooth decay. Other items such as soft drinks and coffee can also accelerate tooth staining if consumed in large amounts. Consider adding foods such as milk, fish, vegetables and almonds to your diet.

Get dental floss for your backpack

While in school, you're bound to eat sugary or sticky foods. Keep dental floss handy to remove sticky particles from your teeth as soon as you're done with a meal.

Don't forget about dental appointments

Finally, don't disregard your regular dental exams. Visit your dentist at least twice a year to ensure that your teeth are as healthy as they need to be.
