Do You Have Loose Dentures? Here's How Implants Can Help

Dentist Blog

Dentures make life a little easier for individuals who have lost a tooth or more due to injury or dental issues. However, these restorations are removable, and this poses the risk of them becoming loose while eating or speaking. Due to the constant changes in the oral structure, dentures may start to fit incorrectly over time as well, and this can make you uneasy all the time. You are worried that they will fall off when you bend over or when taking part in sports. If you have loose dentures, it may be time to consider getting dental implants instead.

How can implants help?

Dental implants are permanently infused in the gum in such a way that they cannot become loose. For this reason, they make the ideal base for dentures that have lost their stability due to changes in the gum and bone structure.

Before placement of the dentures, the dentist will make sure that there is sufficient bone. They will then infuse the denture into the jaw. After that, small retainers are attached to the implants. The retainers are then used to stabilize the dentures and make sure that they fit correctly to the jaw.

Who is a suitable candidate?

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for implant-infused dentures. During your visit to the dentist, they will check your jaw and assess the amount of bone loss that you have suffered. Ideally, if you have had dentures for a long period, you may have suffered significant bone loss. In this case, a bone grafting procedure will be carried out to rebuild the bone so that the implants can settle in the jaw properly. However, if you have recently lost your teeth, bone grafting may not be necessary as you may still have enough bone for implants placement.

Is the procedure expensive?

The overall cost of the denture stabilization procedure will depend on the number of lost teeth and whether you need bone grafting. While the treatment may not be as cheap as getting dentures, it is worth it in the long run. Implants are a permanent solution to tooth loss, and you don't have to worry about replacing them. What's more, if you get tired of using dentures, you can get crowns in place of the dentures. Crowns are placed on the implants, and you don't have to remove them regularly as you do the dentures.
