How To Decide Whether To Get Braces As An Adult

Dentist Blog

Getting braces as an adult is a choice that more and more people are making, as new ranges of discreet adult braces become available. Braces can provide a boost of confidence, as well as making your teeth easier to clean and take care of. However, there are a few things that any adult should consider before making the big decision to get braces.

Consult With An Orthodontist

This should be the first step towards getting braces, as a qualified orthodontist can examine you and tell you whether you are a suitable candidate for braces and what kind of braces you might want. They can also tell you how much you need braces. Some adults get braces to fix crooked teeth, but as WebMD explains, they can also fix other dental issues, such as a misaligned bite, or trouble chewing and cleaning your teeth. You should also think about how badly you want straight teeth—be honest with yourself about how much your crooked teeth bother you.

Think About Your Finances

There is often financial help and support available for children who need braces, but as an adult, you will need to pay the bill yourself. For many people, this is the biggest barrier to braces as an adult. Carefree Dental states that you may need to wear braces for as long as twenty months. There is likely to be a monthly fee to pay for each of these months to cover the cost of the braces and repeated orthodontist visits. Look into all the options available to you, such as monthly payment plans, and work out what you can realistically afford.

Consider The Realities Of Braces

While having straight teeth sounds great, there are also downsides to braces. As MiSmile points out, you'll need to commit to an enhanced oral hygiene routine in order to cope with the challenges of braces. Not only will you need to brush after every meal or snack, but you will also have to visit the orthodontist on a regular basis. You will also have to avoid certain foods, such as gum, hard sweets and popcorn. You should also be prepared for some initial discomfort. If you are not prepared for these inconveniences, braces may not be for you.

While the negative aspects of braces can seem overwhelming, they should not dictate your decision entirely. If you desperately want braces and can afford them, then the downsides should not put you off. To find out more, you should schedule a consultation with an orthodontist to discuss your options.
